Terms used when purchasing your air conditioner
There are several terms which are important for you to know when you are talking to your air con vendor.

When you are sourcing to purchase for a new air conditioning system in your house, it is advantageous to have some general knowledge because it is pretty easy to get “SMOKED” by the sales person. As there is always a term for sales people, “if you can’t convince them, confuse them”. While we try to stay positive that many air con sales representative are good people, there are always bad nature sales people who are out there to take advantage of owners who do not have prior knowledge when purchasing an aircon. Here are the important terms to take note when you communicate with an air con sale representative.
Air Filter – This is an important term to know, you should ensure if the air filter in the system is easy to change and how it filters the dust and bacteria from the air. It is also important to know if you will be able to get replacements easily and where to get them. A great air filter ensures that your home enjoys the most clean and fresh air for a healthier living lifestyle.
Air Handler – This terms explains how the evaporator coil and the blower motor works together. The sales representative should explain how the air is being move through your home via this process.
Coils – Refrigerant from the compressor moves through the coils to remove the heat out from the home. The heat then travels through the refrigerant and is cooled before entering the ducts inside your home.
Compressor & Condenser – It is an important point because they remove the heat inside your house. The compressor moves the refrigerant through the unit and the fan in the condenser blows out the heat.
Cooling Load – You will need this to select the right air con unit for your home as this process is being measured by a technical manual named “Manual J”. It will require many factors to calculate, including the location of the house windows, the way your home doors and windows are sealed, the levels of insulation and the size of your house.
SEER – This is the energy efficiency ratio of the system. The higher the EER is scored, the better your aircon units can save energy on your utility bills. A minimum SEER number should be 13 while the best units are all in the 20s mark. This is also an important term, you should remember before purchasing your air conditioner system. Tons – Your air con should be measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). These are put in tons, a 12,000 BTUs equals to one ton. The more tons is needed to cool your house if your home has a larger cooling load.
